Artist:Faig Ahmed
Year:2014
Faig Ahmed is a multidisciplinary Azerbaijani artist renowned for his innovative work across painting, video, performance, and installation. He is particularly celebrated for transforming traditional Azerbaijani carpets into contemporary masterpieces through the use of visual illusions and modern design elements. These transformations often feature dramatic shifts in expression and symbol changes. Ahmed’s creations are more than just a reinterpretation of traditional crafts. They demonstrate a reinvigoration of culture itself, linking Azerbaijan’s rich history of carpet weaving with the contemporary world. His works delve into the convergence of tradition and modernity, deconstructing conventional patterns and symbols to craft original pieces.
These works not only showcase his cultural heritage but also challenge viewers to rethink the boundaries between the traditional and the modern. Faig Ahmed’s works and creative approach have inspired me to explore the integration of tradition and modernity in my artistic endeavors. His exploration of traditional carpet materials through structural changes, as well as the incorporation of modern elements, is particularly inspiring. This innovative approach motivates me to experiment with different materials or combine existing ones in new ways. Ahmed excels in presenting traditional patterns with a fresh artistic impact, employing visual illusions and pattern deformations. His technique of disassembling and rearranging traditional motifs has led me to consider integrating AI technology into my project. This involves reinterpreting and generating the traditional patterns of Dunhuang murals through algorithms, updating them to be more modern and dynamic. In my designs, I aim to create unexpected visual effects by deforming or rearranging Dunhuang patterns. Simultaneously, I strive to present Buddhist elements and other traditional symbols in modern forms, reinvigorating their significance within contemporary culture. Inspired by Faig Ahmed’s works, which necessitate viewing from multiple perspectives to fully appreciate their visual and conceptual transformations, I am encouraged to rethink how my creations engage the audience. My goal is to elevate my work beyond mere visual appreciation, transforming it into an interactive medium that provokes active exploration and reflection from the viewers.

OMG! It’s melting!
I won’t put it in my home…
Faig Ahmed’s “Liquid” utterly reshapes my perception of traditional craftsmanship. The way he allows the rigid structure of a traditional carpet to seemingly melt into fluid, organic forms is visually stunning and conceptually groundbreaking. This piece is not just an artwork; it’s a bold statement on the fluidity of cultural identity in the modern world. Astonishing! Thank you for your portfolio, which allows me to see so many excellent works of art.
I love art that has anything to do with religion! I’m sure we’ll see your work in the near future that creates unexpected visual effects by distorting or rearranging Dunhuang patterns.
